A Key Date to Immigration Problems

According to the AP's "Today In History", on this day (March 28th)
In 1898, the Supreme Court ruled that a child born in the United States to Chinese immigrants was a U.S. citizen.

In my mind, this is a key ruling that leads to today's illegal immigration problems. It is on the basis of this ruling that an illegal immigrant can come to this country, give birth to a child, and then stay here until said child is grown. (No, I'm not saying that there a hordes of people coming here expressly to give their unborn children US citizenship - but it does work out that way.) The big question is, has there been a Supreme Court ruling saying the this right carries over to the US-born children of illegal immigrants?
